Specialist Damp Proofing and Timber Treatment Company Providing Specialist Damp & Timber Survey & Reports.

Are you considering buying, selling or re-mortgaging a property in Cheshire, Shropshire or the Wirral?
If so, you will probably have a building society survey or valuation carried out. You may also decide to have a Homebuyers report or even a full structural survey. When you receive your report, there may be a recommendation for a Specialist Damp and Timber company to inspect the property for damp, woodworm or timber decay.
This is where DampAid UK come in.

Are you a home owner in Cheshire, Shropshire or the Wirral who has discovered a particular problem that concerns you? Damp walls, woodworm or rotten timbers or dry rot.

Either way, if you require a damp and timber survey, rising damp treatment, (damp proofing, damp proof course) woodworm treatment or dry rot control or timber treatment you can call us on 0800 0680 881, email us or fill in our survey request form to make an appointment.

With any building defect, it is essential that you get a correct diagnosis of the problem before any recommendations for dealing with it can be made. Dampaid UK deal with problems arising from damp in a building as well as woodworm and timber decay. An initial inspection is carried out by a specialist CSRT surveyor to correctly diagnose the problem and provide the necessary recommended remedial measure to rectify it. Wherever possible environmentally friendly, cost effective solutions are provided for damp treatment avoiding chemical treatment. If no chemical treatment is needed we will say so.

Some of our competitors use surveyors who are paid by commission. DampAid UK does not. Our inspections are carried out only by surveyors qualified in remedial building problems, and whilst all companies need to make a profit, our surveyors are not motivated by commission earnings and we do not need to find unncessary work to quote for. If nothing needs to be done, we will say so.

Damp Survey in Cheshire, Shropshire or the Wirral

The survey will be carried out by a fully qualified CSRT specialist surveyor who is an expert in the damp and timber industry, having been specifically trained in this field.

Depending on the instructions received, the surveyor will inspect all accessible walls at ground floor level for rising damp using an electric resistance metre and visible observations. (However, he will not normally move external obstructions or internal furnishings). The whole property will be visually inspected for signs of significant condensation, (backed up by measurements taken with a thermo hygrometer, if it is considered advisable to do so). External observations will be made and relevant comments on building defects such as rainwater goods, external render etc, will be made where appropriate, to the client or in the report if submitted. Any visual evidence of timber decay will also be reported upon.

Timber Survey in Cheshire, Shropshire or the Wirral

Accessible timbers will be inspected for woodboring insect attack or timber decay (dry rot, wet rot). Roof timbers will be inspected if safe access is available. Floor timbers will be inspected where accessible. With occupied properties the inspections are usually limited. Fitted carpets will not normally be lifted (unless loose) or furniture moved. Floorboards will not be lifted unless they are loose enough to do so without causing any damage. Staircase timbers will be inspected, except where fitted carpets are present. Soffits to the underside of the staircase often prevent inspection of the timbers too.

Did You Know? (Just for fun!)

  • Did you know that Chester Racecourse is Britains Oldest sporting venue (in continual use) with the first race occurring in 1540
  • Did you know that the first person to walk across Chesters Grosvenor Bridge was a young Princess Victoria (in 1819) - later to be Queen
  • Did you know that under a tudor law it is illegal for welshmen to enter Chester after nightfall. (Well that leaves one of our surveyors with a problem then!!)
  • Did you know the only working salt mine in Britain is at Winsford. Worked since 1844 it uses the worlds largest underground digger.
  • Cheshire’s Principal Towns are: Chester, Warrington, Knutsford, Stockport, Nantwich, Crewe, Macclesfield.
  • The area around Northwich was mined for salt from Roman times and although the mines are now closed, brine is still pumped from under the town. The salt industry caused large areas of subsidence, and this is said to account for the many old timber-framed houses in the town, which could withstand the movement of the ground.
  • Tatton Hall, near Knutsford, was the ancestral home of the Egerton Family. William Egerton started building the present Hall in 1790. The Hall is surrounded by an estate covering an area of almost five square miles. The last of the family, Maurice Egerton, bequeathed Tatton to the National Trust so that it would continue to be maintained after his death in 1958.
  • The Roman name for Chester is DEVA. The Romans built the fortress of Deva (in a loop of the River Dee) for the 20th Legion. They used it as a port to bring in supplies for their other forts in the North West, and also as a defence against the Celts in Wales.
  • The Boat Lift at Anderton, near Northwich, was constructed in 1875 and was the first of its kind in the world. In the 1760’s the Trustees of the River Weaver Navigation had objected when a canal was constructed between the River Trent in the Midlands and the River Mersey in Cheshire as their waterway depended on the pottery traffic to and from the Midlands. It was therefore decided to link the two waterways and Anderton was the ideal place as at this point the river and canal were only 400 feet apart with a vertical distance of about 50 feet. Originally the goods were transferred by chutes, dropping the goods from the canal boats to the river boats 50 feet below, while cranes lifted the goods in the other direction. The Boat Lift used a hydraulic system to lift and lower the actual barges and canal boats from one waterway to the other. In 1983 it had to be closed because of the huge cost of repairing and maintaining it, but due to the demands from the increasingly popular leisure traffic, it was overhauled and re-opened in 2002.
  • In the early 1830s Crewe was a small hamlet but in 1837 it became the junction of three railway lines, the Manchester and Birmingham, the Great Junction and the Chester and Crewe. In 1840 the Grand Junction Company bought large areas of land around Crewe and moved its locomotive and carriage works to the town. An average of one locomotive a week was produced at Crewe for the next 150 years.
  • Jodrell Bank Observatory is part of the University of Manchester's Department of Physics and Astronomy and is home to the Lovell Radio Telescope. In the 1940’s Bernard Lovell, a physicist at the University of Manchester, brought a radar system to the country area in the east of Cheshire in order to escape the radio interference in the centre of the city. The 250-foot-wide radio telescope was begun in 1952 and completed in 1957. It is the world's second-largest fully steerable radio telescope.
  • Macclesfield thrived as a market town in the Middle Ages and button-making was an early cottage industry. In the 17th century this developed into silk-button making and then into actually making the silk itself. Over 120 silk mills were built in the 17th and 18th centuries and for 200 years silk was the major industry of Macclesfield. The industry started to decline once the duties on the import of foreign silk were removed in 1860.
  • In the centre of the town of Sandbach there are two carved sandstone obelisks, thought to date from the time when Christianity was brought to the area. The two obelisks are thought to be Saxon crosses dating from the eighth or ninth centuries. The larger obelisk shows scenes from the Bible, the smaller shows the events leading up to the conversion of the pagan Paeda, son of the King of Mercia and his marriage to the Christian daughter of the King of Northumbria.
  • Until 1999, Wirral's postcode began with the letter 'L', signifying Liverpool as the local sorting office. However, a new automated office opening in Chester prompted the change to 'CH'.
  • US Central Park architect, Frederick Law Olmsted, visited Birkenhead Park in 1850. Impressed by the landscaping in the Joseph Paxton designed public space, he used these principles in setting out Central Park, New York.
  • Birkenhead is where the first European method of public transport (trams) was used. Established in August 1860, the trams were initially horse-drawn, until electrification in 1901. They continued to run until their closure in 1937 as a result of competition from petrol powered buses.
  • The Scarecrow Festival, held each summer in Thornton Hough, has been running since 2000, when 700+ scarecrows are exhibited throughout the village. The money raised is put towards the upkeep of the village.
  • Wirheal was the Anglo-Saxon name for Wirral and means Myrtle tree (Wir) Corner (heal).
  • The track scenes for the winner of the 1981 Oscar for Best Picture - Chariots of Fire - were filmed at the Bebington Oval sports centre due to its resemblance to the Paris Stadium in the 1920's.
  • Lever Brothers, produced the world's first packaged laundry soap. One of the brothers, William Hesketh Lever, founded the village Port Sunlight in 1888 to house his factory workers and named it after the new brand, Sunlight Soap. Each block of houses was designed by a different architect and today the village contains 900 Grade II listed buildings. Until the 1980’s all residents were Unilever employees, but the houses are now sold privately.Levers merged in 1930 with Dutch company Margarine Union, to form what is today known as Unilever. Port Sunlight today, is a centre for Unilever's Research and Development activities.
  • The Royal Liverpool Golf Club, based at Hoylake, held the British Open Golf Championship 10 times until 1969. 37 years later in 2006, the course was to hold the 134th Open.
  • A tower similar in style to Blackpool Tower, once stood in the Wirral town of New Brighton. At 567 feet tall, New Brighton Tower, was nearly 50 feet taller than Blackpool Tower when it opened in 1900. Falling into disuse during the First World War, the steel tower was dismantled in 1921 leaving the ballroom building at the base. This was destroyed by fire in 1969.
